It's my very first debut to appear in an interview for a newsletter.
Q & A: INTERVIEW WITH A DEVA
Interview by Louise Mackay

This month DEJ had the pleasure of interviewing one of our
newest members, Maureen Tan, a software engineer from
Manila.

1) Where are you from? Is this the same location as you are
from originally? If not, when and why did you relocate
there?

I'm currently living in Hachioji City, Tokyo. I'm originally
from Manila, Philippines. I moved to Tokyo last March 2003
because of my job. My company sent me to Japan to learn how
the Japanese do business. I'm a software engineer,
basically I do programming and websites for my company's
clients. Then, on the side, I also do websites for other
people.

2) How long have you been a member of DigitalEve Japan?

Less than a month.

3) How did you find out about DigitalEve Japan and why did
you decide to join?

I saw DigitalEve on SheUnlimited Forums. They have a
Japanese section there, and they have links for different
women's organizations in Japan.

I decided to join DigitalEve because I want to see what
other ladies in Japan are doing. I have been a member of
different groups in Japan and it helps me expand my network
of contacts. In this process, I meet new friends as well as
potential clients.

4) What DE-J activities/resources have you participated in?
What did you think of them?

None yet. But I am looking forward to contributing to the
technology part since that is where my skills are. I also
want to contribute some articles though I have no confidence
in my writing ability. Currently, I try to write for my
personal website and this one website for Filipino
Professionals.

5) Are there any other activities and resources you would
like to see offered by DigitalEve Japan?

Forums would be nice, since they are interactive. Also, how
about links exchange? For example, I want my website
advertised on the DigitalEve website in return I'll allot a
space for a DigitalEve banner on my website. I think that
would be pretty cool.

6) What are your interests in digital technology?

I am into websites, blogs, rich internet applications,
etc...it's my job. I like the way digital technology
evolves. It's fast and one has to monitor it or else you'll
fall behind.

7) What kind of computer do you use?

My first laptop, a Toshiba Dynabook Pentium M 700+Mhz 60GB
256RAM. I bought it 2 years ago. I want to replace it, if
only I had the budget...;)

8) Please tell me a little bit about where you work and what
your responsibilities are?

As I have mentioned previously, my job title is a software
engineer. Basically, I do computer software, websites,
consultations, etc. Whatever the clients need technology-
wise, I deliver the solution to them.

9) Do you have any favourite software programs? If so, why?

Favourite programs? Well, let's say I format my laptop: the
programs I will install right away will be Yahoo Messenger,
Winrar, Skype, Mozilla, VLC, Office, and not to mention
antivirus. Those are the programs I use daily.

10) What is your favourite computer-related activity? (for
example, games, email, surfing the net, etc.) Do you have
any other hobbies?

The moment I arrive home or the office I:
- turn my computer on right away;
- open Mozilla and check email (Yahoo, Gmail, Officemail);
- read Philippine news, Japanese news, world news,
entertainment news;
- check forex rates; check weather for the following day;
- check auction sites for good bargains;
- check/moderate forums.

I spend at least 12 hours in front of the computer during
weekdays. On weekends, at least 6 hours.

Other hobbies include reading books, writing articles for
different websites. Then on weekends, I cook home-made
dishes and eat to my heart's desire. I am also into
completing jigsaw puzzles and cross-stitching.

11) What is your favourite website and why?

That would be my personal website. *wink* It's
www.maureentan.co.nr, but I'm about to change it to another
domain. This .co.nr domain is a free redirect. I'll
probably get www.maureentan.com or www.maustan.com. Still
contemplating about the two. You see, when you search
Google and type Maureen Tan, the search results always lead
to an American author with the exact same name. Then if I
try to search Maureen Jane Tan, that being my full name, I
still get the American author results. Would you believe
that the author has a book entitled AKA Jane - what a
coincidence!

12) Name three things you will always find near your
computer.

Can I mention four? Calendar, Box of Tissues, Mug, Pens.
